Polar Vortex

A polar vortex is a large area of low-pressure, frigid air that circulates near the Earth’s poles, typically contained by strong jet stream winds. When the jet stream weakens, this cold air can dip southward, bringing extreme winter weather and freezing temperatures to regions far from the Arctic.
