Fairview Pipe Joint Sealing
Hayward, CA
The Challenge
A 140-foot storm drain with 90% joint leakage posed challenges due to its path through three residential properties, requiring careful coordination and planning.
The Solution
A GPR scan, injection tubes at 35 points, and camera verification ensured effective joint sealing, with Groundworks collaborating with Alameda County to finalize project specifications.
The Impact
The storm drain pipe was fully rehabilitated in a single 10-hour shift, with all joints sealed, excess polymer removed, and minimal cost or disruption compared to replacement.
The Challenge
140 linear feet of a 30” storm drain leaking at 90% of its joints.
The project faced significant challenges, including a 140-linear-foot section of a 30-inch storm drain leaking at nearly 90% of its joints. Additionally, the storm drain ran through three separate residential properties, complicating access and coordination. These issues required careful planning and collaboration to minimize disruptions for homeowners while addressing the extensive leakage and ensuring long-term functionality of the storm drain system.

The Solution
Injection tubes installed on 35 joints.
Groundworks implemented a precise solution to the storm drain issue by first performing a GPR Scan to accurately locate the vertical and horizontal alignment of the 30-inch pipe. This ensured a clear understanding of the pipe’s structure and any underlying issues. Injection tubes were strategically installed on both sides of each of the 35 joints to effectively target and seal the leaks. To verify the success of the joint sealing process, a camera was inserted through the pipe, ensuring the integrity of the seals and confirming that the repairs were effective. This solution provided a detailed and thorough approach to addressing the storm drain’s leaks without disrupting the surrounding properties.
Groundworks collaborated directly with Alameda County to develop precise project specifications, aligning efforts to ensure the successful completion of the repair while minimizing disruptions.
The Impact
10-hour pipe rehabilitation with minimal disruption.
Groundworks successfully sealed each joint, ensuring the polymer infiltrated the entire length of the pipe joints. The access polymer was removed upon completion, and the rehabilitation was finished in a single 10-hour shift. This repair utilized Groundworks’ polymers, which were a fraction of the cost, time, and disruption compared to a full pipe replacement, offering an efficient and cost-effective solution.
