Case Study: Fixing Bowing Walls and Foundation Issues in Medina, OH

A 1956 home in Medina, OH, was suffering from bowing basement walls and major foundation cracks caused by years of water damage and hydrostatic pressure.

To resolve the issue without disturbing the homeowner’s yard, our team installed the IntelliBrace™ system—custom-fit, rust-resistant I-beams that stabilize and can gradually straighten the walls over time. In just two days, the project restored the foundation’s stability and gave the homeowner peace of mind for the future.

The Challenge

  • A home had two bowing basement walls, one with significant cracks.
  • The damage was caused by hydrostatic pressure and the clay bowl effect.
  • Heavy rains in the Cleveland increased the repairs.

The Solution

  • Installed the IntelliBrace™ system.
  • Beams were custom-fit and allowed for gradual tightening.
  • Installation was completed in just two days and required no exterior excavation.

The Impact

  • Foundation walls are now stabilized.
  • The system allows future wall adjustment.
  • The homeowner was pleased with the low-impact install and professional service.

Before Foundation Repair:

Hydrostatic Pressure and Soil Movement

In this home, built in 1956, years of poor drainage and frequent heavy rains caused the surrounding soil to expand and contract repeatedly.

This constant movement created intense hydrostatic pressure against the basement walls. As a result, one wall bowed inward, while another developed large cracks and began to tilt. These signs pointed to serious foundation instability and made professional repair urgent.

After Foundation Repair:

Installing IntelliBrace™ Beams

In this Medina, OH, home, our team installed the IntelliBrace™ system to stabilize the bowing basement walls.

The first step involved clearing the basement and carefully measuring the walls to ensure a precise fit for the custom-cut, rust-resistant steel I-beams. Once prepared, we anchored the beams to the floor and floor joists using secure brackets.

The top bracket allows for gradual tightening, which can help return the wall closer to its original position over time—without adding stress or causing further damage.

The Groundworks crew that worked on my home foundation did a great job. The foreman, Luis G. and co-foreman Ken H. did a great job of communicating what was they were going to do that day and what would happen over the week. The foreman and installers Mark P and Leo worked hard and it got hot over the two weeks they were here. On top of that they did a great job of cleaning up when they finished their portion. Just by installing the foundation stabilizing joints and piers (I had over 20 ), it actually raised the foundation significantly without breaking windows or adding cracks in my walls. They did a great job of cleaning up after putting the piers in. A warning if they put the tarp down for the dirt dug up for the piers, on your lawn it will damage it but I am sure it will grow back. About the only thing I could complain about was the two broken sprinkler heads but they repaired it and the concrete crew out today will work on the other one. I have been impressed with Groundworks, from the original inspector Chris H. to Luis G. and his crew, I am sure that David and his concrete crew will be great as well. It isn’t cheap but for the quality of work it is worth it. Based on their work so far I would recommend Groundworks.

Ceiling cracks warrant concern when they are wider than a pencil, uneven, or accompanied by other signs of structural damage, such as sticking doors or windows or uneven floors.
