The Challenge
Address subsidence and soil consolidation issues caused by a failed utility trench in a high-traffic residential area, overcoming extreme weather conditions and the proximity of a main sewer line.
The Solution
Inject high-density polyurethane at targeted depths, ensuring soil densification and a smooth asphalt lift, all while inspecting the nearby sewer line for safety.
The Impact
The trench was fully stabilized and densified in just 7 days, with asphalt lifted to a level surface, all completed during daytime hours to minimize disruption.
The Challenge
Utility trench failure and pavement subsidence in high-traffic residential area.
The project focused on addressing a failed utility trench that spanned 1,170 linear feet and 15 feet wide, where soil consolidation led to subsidence of the pavement. Located in a heavily trafficked and populated residential and resort community, the site faced additional challenges, including extreme 115+ degree temperatures and the presence of a main sewer line 15 feet below grade.

The Solution
Stabilize using high-density polyurethane from the -5′ injection depth.
To resolve these issues, Groundworks employed a methodical approach to stabilize the soil and prevent further subsidence, using high-density polyurethane injections to fill voids and strengthen the foundation beneath the pavement, ensuring the integrity of the road without disrupting the surrounding community.
To address the subsidence caused by loose soils at depths ranging from -2’ to -15’, Groundworks conducted strategic injections at -5’ and -10’ depths based on pre-SPT testing. The injection points were placed with a 4-foot radius of influence to ensure thorough coverage and proper densification of the soil. To minimize uneven lifting of the flexible asphalt, the lifting process was executed from the -5’ injection depth. Additionally, a visual inspection of the nearby sewer line was conducted during the injection process to ensure no disruption or damage occurred. This method effectively stabilized the soil, restored the pavement, and prevented further settlement.
The Impact
Timely completion and minimal disruption to community.
The project was completed ahead of schedule, with the entire trench successfully stabilized and densified in just 7 working days, significantly reducing user inconvenience. The asphalt pavement was lifted to a level that minimized uneven surfaces, and all work was carried out during daytime hours to mitigate noise disruption, ensuring a smooth and efficient repair process with minimal impact on the surrounding residential and resort community.
