Case Study: Crawl Space Encapsulation in Huntsville, AL

A crawlspace with exposed insulation, concrete block supports, and plastic sheeting on the ground.

In Huntsville, AL, a homeowner was growing increasingly concerned about moisture buildup and groundwater intrusion in their crawl space. These issues were putting the home’s air quality and structural integrity at risk. AFS responded with a 30-hour encapsulation project that included drainage, vapor barrier installation, and humidity control. The result: a drier, healthier home and peace of mind for the future.

The Challenge

  • Excessive crawl space moisture and groundwater intrusion
  • Mold, wood rot, and poor air quality concerns
  • Water buildup caused by local clay soil and frequent storms

The Solution

  • 3,000 sq. ft. encapsulation with 120-mil vapor barrier
  • Interior drainage system and sump pump
  • Crawl space dehumidifier set to 55% RH

The Impact

  • Crawl space dried and protected from future water intrusion
  • Improved indoor air quality and long-term home health
  • Project completed in 30 hours without homeowner displacement

Before Crawl Space Repair:

Moisture Threatening the Home’s Health

The homeowner reached out to AFS with growing concerns about standing water and humidity in their crawl space. Water from rain and surrounding clay soil was seeping in, creating an ideal environment for mold and wood rot.

Poor Air Quality and Structural Risks

The moisture wasn’t just a comfort issue—it posed a serious risk to the home’s structure and indoor air quality. Without intervention, the crawl space was becoming a source of allergens, mold, and foundation problems.

After Crawl Space Repair:

Drainage and Humidity Control

An interior drainage system with a sump pump was installed to manage any groundwater that might collect beneath the barrier. A commercial-grade dehumidifier was added to keep the crawl space at a consistent 55% relative humidity.

Full Encapsulation Across 3,000 Sq. Ft.

Led by foreman Dean Sharpe, the AFS team installed a 120-mil vapor barrier to fully encapsulate the crawl space and isolate it from ground moisture. The barrier covered the entire 3,000 sq. ft. space, sealing off key entry points for water.

The guys Bobby, David, and Bryce that come out to do the work on my home was extremely professional! They called to let me know they were on their way, let us know when they finished, made sure I didn’t have any questions for the team daily, made sure I didn’t have any issues that needed to be addressed in the process, didn’t bother us as they worked, cleaned up after themselves each day, asked to leave couple items overnight for the job and placed a cone by it, steadily worked in 105 heat index taking 1-2 breaks, let us know when completed to let me inspect and showed me everything done explaining through details of it, answering all questions I had while inspecting, the process they did to protect it and the dehumidifier. Once they finished inspection with me, they finished cleaning everything up and one sat down with me to finish process and signing still making sure all my questions and concerns were answered. He then looked at my plan and explained future of the system and what will take place. I trusted the process of them and extremely satisfied. These men were an absolute representation of the company from start to finish! I’m absolutely very happy with them and process. Highly recommend.
